The singer of Almeria heard all this stoically and with the courage that characterized him said: "Well, nothing, if I have to get on the bike, it will be done"

John Marshall Mantel for The New York Times

Wisin & Yandel, from left above, a Puerto Rican duo, brought their reggaetón sounds and Spanish-singing guests to Madison Square Garden.

In their songs, Wisin (born Juan Luis Morera Luna) and Yandel (Llandel Veguilla Malavé Salazar) can't resist a pretty body, especially when she's dancing. Over the boom-chicka-boom-chick reggaetón beat — a Latin twist on Jamaican dancehall — Yandel (pronounced Yon-DELL) croons romantic endearments while Wisin (WE-seen) raps some racier specifics. Pop melodies dominate the songs, adrenalized by Wisin's excitable voice. Now and then they claim reggaetón's street-level grit, but they're pop Romeos at heart, with squealing female fans who return the affection.

On Saturday night Wisin & Yandel put on a gaudy, cheesy arena spectacle, with video screens regularly flashing their names, dancers doing angular MTV moves and fireworks erupting every few songs.

Yet the real show was in the international connections — and demographic ambitions — that Wisin & Yandel flaunted. Along with Puerto Ricans, a major Hispanic contingent in New York City is Dominicans, and Wisin & Yandel have been courting them by sometimes mixing reggaetón with Dominican music. They sang "Mayor Que Yo" ("Older Than I"), which overlays its reggaetón with a galloping Dominican merengue beat, and they regularly called out to Dominicans in the audience.

Like hip-hop, reggaetón thrives on collaborations, and Wisin & Yandel recreated some of theirs onstage. They shared the Arabic-flavored "Torre de Babel" with a pop singer from Spain, David Bisbal, who showed off an acrobatic leaping twirl. They had their socially conscious moment with the Venezuelan singer Franco De Vita and his U2-tinged anthem, "Donde Está el Amor" ("Where Is the Love"). A Puerto Rican singer, Luis Fonsi, joined them for the love song "Yo Te Quiero" ("I Want You"). And they brought on Ivy Queen, the Puerto Rican reggaetón star who defies the style's machismo by suffering more dramatically and vowing vengeance more furiously. She also had a Dominican-flavored song, using bachata guitar in "Te He Querido, Te He Llorado" ("I've Loved You, I've Cried for You").

But the ranking guest was the smiling, belligerent rapper 50 Cent with his group, G-Unit. They had a song of their own that matched Wisin & Yandel's fondness for dancing girls: "I Like the Way She Do It." And they shared their hip-hop/reggaetón merger of G-Unit's "Rider Part Two" interspersed with Wisin & Yandel's Spanish lyrics. Afterward 50 Cent shouted "Puerto Rico!" — one more demographic outreach

ALAS de los Angelitos - David Bisbal

With the affirmation of "We are going to make history," Shakira and Miguel Bosé announced on Thursday that the ALAS Foundation will receive a donation of 200 million dollars from businessmen Carlos Slim and Howard Buffett, as well as from wealthy families all over Latin America.

Slim alone is donating 110 million dollars to the cause. The Mexican businessman said he feels a social responsibility towards the less fortunate and said that as a member of ALAS he is using his business experience to help solve social problems.

American Buffett will contribute 85 million dollars. "Poverty has devastating consequences. Those who prefer to live with their eyes closed will see the consequences. ALAS will not allow it" said Miguel Bosé in a press conferenece two days before the massive free concerts that will be held for the cause, which will happen simultaneously in Mexico City and Buenos Aires.

I'm sure the 110 million is no skin off of Slim's nose, but it's nice to see this happen. I've always found it to be an offensive contradiction that one of the world's top 5 richest men would be from a country where half the population lives in poverty and one-fifth in extreme poverty.
